The National Cancer Institute (NCI) estimates that with current rates, a woman born today in the United States has a 1 in 8 chance of developing invasive breast cancer during her lifetime. This risk was about 1 in 10 during the 1970's.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for women in the U.S, after lung cancer. Approximately 39,840 women and 390 men in the U.S. will die from the disease in 2010 (NCI, 2010).
Excluding skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the United States. It is estimated that 261,100 new cases of invasive and in situ breast cancer will be diagnosed among women in the US in 2010. Approximately 1,970 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among U.S men (ACS, 2010).
On January 1, 2007, there were approximately 2,591,855 women living in the United States with a history of breast cancer (SEER, 2010).

RIA has five (5) full service diagnostic imaging sites in southern Maryland and northern Virginia. Each center has a “women only” women's imaging center, a private area that creates a more calming imaging experience unique to women's imaging. Every RIA women's imaging center is accredited by the American College of Radiology and the digital mammography systems are Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) certified. Our breast imaging team consists of board certified radiologists and certified technologists who have many years of experience in this area. Some of the team members are breast cancer survivors and they themselves understand the anxieties, fears and emotions you may experience.
