Stereotactic technique involves the
use of computers to pinpoint the exact location of a breast
mass based on digital mammogram x-rays taken from two different
angles. Computer generated coordinates help the radiologist
to precisely guide a biopsy needle directly to the correct
area in the breast where tiny samples of tissue are removed
and sent for laboratory evaluation by a pathologist.
This procedure often avoids the need
for an open surgical (excisional) biopsy. The accuracy
of stereotactic breast biopsy is similar to excisional
biopsy, but is much less complicated to perform, and it
requires less time than a surgical biopsy. There is decreased
patient discomfort and recovery is very quick. Since stereotactic
breast biopsy does not require an incision like surgical
biopsy, there is no cosmetic defect of the breast. A band-aid
is placed over the site where the biopsy needle was placed.
Also, stereotactic breast biopsy is more cost effective
than the surgical approach.
What is involved in the procedure?
The Stereotactic Biopsy of a small
area of your breast tissue is performed by a board certified
radiologist with special competency and experience in
this technique. We have depth of experience performing
these procedures since 1995. A mammography technologist
will assist the radiologist throughout the procedure.
You will be positioned as comfortably as possible on
your abdomen on a special padded x-ray table and your
breast will be gently place through an opening in the
table. Once you are in position, your breast will be
held in place with light compression. You will then be
asked to briefly hold your breath as x-ray pictures are
taken. This is done to verify the location of the area
to be sampled. The radiologist will review the films and
will use a computer to precisely locate the area of your
breast tissue to be sampled. Next, the radiologist will
numb the area to be tested. Then a small ¼" incision
will be made through which the biopsy needle will be inserted.
You may feel some slight pressure at this time. It is important
to relax, as this is rarely painful.
